Embracing Winter in Shakopee and the Southwest Metro

We often think of winter as something to be endured. Scandinavian countries (from which many of our ancestors immigrated) on the other hand, embrace the season. Here in the southwest metro there are many venues and activities that provide great opportunities to enjoy winter.
Several of our local Shakopee parks have outdoor ice rinks with warming houses for skating (dependent on weather). Centennial Lakes Park in Edina also has an ice rink for public skating and skate rentals.
The Minnesota Valley Wildlife Refuge centers in both Bloomington and Carver have great trails to check out any time of year. In the winter if there is at least 6” of snow on the ground, you can check out snowshoes for use free of charge.
Hyland Hills, affiliated with Hyland Park and located in Bloomington, is a great venue for those learning to ski or snowboard.
Cleary Park in Prior Lake and Carver Park in Carver, both affiliated with Hyland Park Reserve, offer snowshoe and cross country ski rentals.
Buck Hill in Burnsville also offers skiing and snowboarding in addition to tubing.
Hoigaards hosts several workshops for cross country skiing, snowshoeing and Nordic walking at local parks including the Arboretum. They are also a great resource for equipment rental.
For ice fishing Lake O’dowd and Quarry Lake (winter season opens January 18th) here in Shakopee, Prior Lake or Spring Lake are nearby options.
No matter the season, the Minneapolis area has much to offer. I think the combination of great schools, local businesses, amenities and proximity to Minneapolis proper combined with reasonable taxes in Scott County make this a great place to live.
